Litvak Days event, a conference is devoted to "YIVO’s Histories, Contexts and Tensions" commemorating the 90th anniversary of the founding of YIVO, the esteemed Yiddish research institute.
For centuries the Lithuanian Jewish community played a critical role in the life of the region, states, empires, and general societies of which it was a part. After Jews settled in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 1400s, its capital became a prominent Jewish spiritual and cultural centre, often dubbed the Jerusalem of the North. Lithuanian history is interwoven with that of its Jews. We also must recall the nearly complete destruction of Lithuanian Jews in the Holocaust, while recognising and supporting the small but dynamic community of the present day.
